BARN HUNT WITH NEU-RODES |
|
|
Neu-Rodes caters to those who like a ‘well-balanced’ dog, that is
titles on both ends of the name.
It is important to us that
our dogs are not only pretty but have work ethic and want to be a
co-operative team member in any adventure we choose. |
BARN HUNT is a scent sport, where the dog needs to learn how to
use the tools naturally given to them to locate the hidden rat, and the handler needs to learn the dogs
cues so they can interpret the dogs findings correctly.
Our friend Paula at Summerfield Rottweilers introduced me to Barn
Hunt. Paula was my original mentor for Carting and encouraged me to the
first AKC Rally trial. Then she got me interested and earning AKC
Tracking titles.... now this! She kept talking about Barn Hunt,
but it sounded silly to me..... till I tried it. The dog needs to
locate the tube that has the rat. The rats are hidden out of sight in a
safe tube and the handler has to call their locations based on the
communication of the dog. As you progress in the levels, there are more
rats to find as well as more tubes without the rat but include rat
litter to challenge the dogs to indicating
the actual rat.
An additional challenge in the Master class is that the handler needs to tell the
Judge when the course is "Clear"-meaning they are confident there are no more rats prior
to time running out. It's a random draw whether you get
1,2,3,4 or 5 rats! Every run is different.

Our first trial experience was at Pacific Northwest Barn Hunt Club in
Chehalis, WA. We not only participated but we helped with Rat Wrangling, Scribing and Gate Stewarding- learning all the inns and outs
by hands on.
We enjoyed having the comradarie of the other Rottweiler exhibitors and
friends, and we were hooked! |

The Rottweiler Nationals
offers Barn Hunt when possible too. We were lucky enough to be able to
play Barn Hunt
between showing dogs at the 2019 Colorado Nationals, where Giddy earned her
RAT-Novice Title. Giddy was only 7 months of age and when she found the
rat, her bum went into the air and the judge said, "CUTEST
INDICATION EVER!" |
